INTERVIEW: RAJAB AL-REEFI
Our projects in Palestine have generally been focused in the West Bank, but in recent years the skate scene in Gaza has been blossoming, largely thanks to the efforts of Gaza Freestyle and Gaza Skate Team, who we’ve been supporting with equipment for the past few years, wherever possible.
Rajab Al-Reefi, the founder of Gaza Skate Team, has been paving the way. A few weeks ago, he posted a clip online of him doing a kickflip in the aftermath of air strikes in Northern Gaza. With his blessing, we collaborated with him in making this t-shirt, in which all sales will be donated to his GoFundMe page, supporting him, his family and community during this time.

Where in Gaza are you from?
I’m from Gaza City in the north. Tuffah neighbourhood.

أنا من شمال غزة حي التفاح
How did you start skating?
I started skating when an Italian organisation – Gaza Freestyle – visited in 2015.

بدأت التزلج مع وفد من ايطاليا جاء في ٢٠١٥
What was your first board, and where did you get it?
A board I built myself because there weren’t any in Gaza. The second was given to me by a friend from Italy. Even now they’re only available through support from friends.
ما هو أول سكيت بورد لك ؟
سكيت بورد صنعته بيدي لأنه لم يوجد في غزة، حتى هذا اللحظة يتوفر بدعم من الأصدقاء
السكيت الأول كان صناعة يدي والثاني من صديقي من ايطاليا

How did the Gaza Skate Team begin?
I founded the team so we can spread the word about skateboarding. It was a small team at first, but it’s growing.

أنا قمت بتأسيس الفريق حتى تنتشر الرياضة
العدد في البداية كان صغير جدا و لكن اليوم أصبح كبير
Can you describe how the skate scene in Gaza has evolved?
Nobody knew this sport at first. People didn’t even know its name. Today it is widely known. To me, that is the biggest success.
هل يمكنك وصف تطور مشهد التزلج في غزة؟
في البداية لم يعرف الناس هذه الرياضة، حتى لا يعرفو إسمها ولكن اليوم أصبحت معروفة بشكل كبير جدا
هذا أكبر نجاح بالنسبة لي
Where do you usually skate?
There were two skateparks in Gaza but now there are none. One was demolished by the government to build one of their projects. The other was destroyed during the current war (2024).

How was your life before October?
I used to work in photography, and like all other young Palestinians I faced many challenges in life, but I always tried to overcome any obstacles.
كيف كانت حياتك قبل أكتوبر؟
أنا كنت أعمل في مجال التصوير وكنت مثل الشباب اواجه صعوبات في الحياة ولكن كنت دائمًا أحاول تخطي الصعوبات
How are you finding the courage to go out and skate right now?
I feel the spirit of resistance in order to continue my work supporting the youth. We believe in God and His power. Nothing stops me from helping people and supporting children. I go out to deliver my message myself and through my sport.
كيف تجد الشجاعة للخروج والتزلج في الوقت الحالي؟
أشعر بروح المقاومة من أجل استمرار عملي في دعم الأطفال والشباب والبنات
نحن نؤمن بالله وبقدره
و لا يوجد شيء يوقفني عن مساعدة الناس ودعم الأطفال
أنا أخرج لكي أوصل رسالتي بنفسي ومن خلال رياضتي

What does skating mean to you?
It means everything to me. Skating is everything in my life. Through it I do everything I love and can help those around me. Before skating I have a lot on my mind and feel incredibly stressed, but while skating I am a different person and I feel comfortable, especially when I skate with the kids. I love working with children.
ماذا يعني لك التزلج؟
يعني لي كل شيء
التزلج هو كل شيء في حياتي لأني من خلاله أفعل كل ما أحب ومن خلاله أساعد من حولي. وأحب العمل مع الأطفال
قبل التزلج تملأ رأسي أفكارٌ كثيرة وأكون مضغوطاً بشكلٍ لا يوصف ولكن أثناء التزلج أكون شخصاً آخراً وأشعر بالراحة بالأخص عندما أتزلج مع الأطفال

What were your feelings that day?
It felt like a huge challenge. Because I am in a war that shows no mercy to anything.

What do your family think about skateboarding?
My family is very proud because I’m always helping people through skateboarding and because I’ve learned so many things through it. My two kids Najwa and Izz – they love it immensely, it’s their favourite activity.

Who is your favourite skater? And who is the best skater in Gaza?
Nyjah Huston. Everyone skates well in Gaza, but we haven’t had any activities or competitions to determine who’s best.

Do you feel connected to the worldwide skateboarding community?
Unfortunately no. When I was first introduced to skateboarding by my friends from Italy, they told me that all the skaters in the world are one family. But this was proved untrue when I tried to communicate with famous skaters and pages and they did not respond.

للأسف لا
أول ما تعرفت على رياضة السكيت بورد مع وفد من إيطاليا أخبروني إنو كل اللاعبين في العالم عائلة واحدة
الشيء الذي أثبت لي عكس ذلك عندما حاولت التواصل مع اللاعبين والصفحات المعرفين و لم يردوا
What are your hopes for the future of skating in Gaza?
My hope is that the skateparks that we lost will be rebuilt so that we can complete our goal of spreading skateboarding as a sport in Gaza and making it available to everyone. My message to the world is that here in Gaza we deserve to skate freely, and to participate in local and international tournaments like any player in the world.

Do you have a message for skaters in the West Bank?
My message is that we try to do something together and have a united voice, and to have a chance to meet all of you.

Anything else you would like to add?
I would like to say that if, God forbid, something happens to me or I become a martyr, please continue my sports career and support the youth and children so that they can have the opportunity to participate in tournaments abroad so the world can see we deserve it. I would like to thank you (Aram) for everything because you are always with me. And thanks and appreciation to SkatePal and all it’s members, because when SkatePal started, skateboarding began in Palestine.
